HiPP German powder vs ready-to-feed comparison

HiPP German Powder vs Ready-to-Feed: What's Really Different?

HiPP German formula comes in two forms: the classic powder in a 600g box, and the ready-to-feed 200ml bottle you simply shake and pour. Many parents assume the bottle is just the powder already mixed with water. It isn't quite. When we compared the labels side by side, we found a few differences that matter to a lot of families: the oils, the probiotic culture, starch, and where the DHA comes from.

Here's what's different, why, and how to choose.

The short answer

  • No palm oil in the organic bottles. HiPP German PRE, Stage 1 and Stage 2 ready-to-feed use sunflower and rapeseed oil only. The powders include palm oil.
  • No probiotic culture in the bottles. The powders contain HiPP's natural lactic acid culture (Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum®). The ready-to-feed bottles don't.
  • No starch in the Stage 1 and Stage 2 bottles. Their only carbohydrate is lactose, while Stage 1 and Stage 2 powder also contain starch.
  • DHA from algae in the bottles. The bottles get their omega-3 DHA from microalgae oil; the powders list fish oil.
  • PRE HA is the exception. HiPP PRE HA ready-to-feed still contains palm oil, just like PRE HA powder.

1. Palm oil: only in the powder (and PRE HA)

The organic HiPP German ready-to-feed bottles (PRE, Stage 1 and Stage 2) use a blend of organic sunflower and rapeseed oil, plus cream. There's no palm oil on the label. The powders use palm oil together with rapeseed and sunflower oil.

Some parents specifically look for palm-oil-free formula, so this is worth knowing. If that's important to you, the organic bottles are an easy way to get it within the HiPP German range.

The one exception is HiPP PRE HA ready-to-feed. Its label lists palm oil, rapeseed oil and sunflower oil, the same as the PRE HA powder.

2. Probiotics: why the bottles don't have them

One of the things HiPP German powder is known for is its natural lactic acid culture, Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum®, originally isolated from breast milk. It's part of what the "Combiotik" name refers to.

The ready-to-feed bottles don't contain this culture. The reason is practical: liquid formula has to be heat-treated so it stays safe on the shelf, and live cultures can't survive that process. The bottles still contain prebiotic GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides from lactose), which is the other half of HiPP's "Combiotik" approach.

If the probiotic culture is a priority for your family, the powder is the way to get it. If convenience matters more, or you use bottles only for nights and travel, the ready-to-feed still gives you the same prebiotics.

3. Starch: lactose only in every bottle

HiPP German Stage 1 and Stage 2 powders contain a small amount of starch. That's what makes them a little thicker and more filling than PRE.

The Stage 1 and Stage 2 ready-to-feed bottles don't contain starch. Like PRE, their only carbohydrate is lactose. So the ready-to-feed Stage 1 is closer to PRE than to Stage 1 powder.

4. DHA: algae instead of fish oil

All HiPP German formulas contain the omega-3 fatty acid DHA. In the ready-to-feed bottles it comes from oil of the microalga Schizochytrium. The powders list fish oil. That also means fish appears among the powders' allergens, but not the bottles'.

Which one should you choose?

Choose powder if…

  • You want the probiotic culture (L. fermentum)
  • You're feeding formula every day and want the lowest cost per feed
  • Your baby does well with the slightly thicker Stage 1 or Stage 2 (with starch)

Choose ready-to-feed if…

  • You prefer a palm-oil-free organic formula (PRE, 1 or 2)
  • You need bottles for nights, travel, daycare or the hospital bag
  • You want feeds that are already mixed to exactly the right strength

Many families use both: powder at home, bottles for on the go. Because they're from the same HiPP stage, switching between them is usually easy. Still, check with your pediatrician if your baby has a sensitive tummy or allergies.

How to use ready-to-feed safely

  1. Wash your hands and use a clean, sterilized feeding bottle.
  2. Shake the unopened bottle well.
  3. Pour the amount your baby needs. Don't add water or powder.
  4. Serve at room temperature, or warm gently in a water bath to about 37°C (98.6°F). Never use a microwave.
  5. Discard any formula left in the feeding bottle after the feed.
  6. Close an opened bottle, keep it in the fridge (max. 6°C), and use it within 24 hours.
